Phlebotomy is considered an entry-level career because there is very little training required to become a phlebotomist. However, it is still considered an excellent career choice with the opportunity for growth in other fields. A phlebotomist is a trained healthcare professional responsible for drawing blood from patients and performing related duties. They work with patients sent for routine blood work, patients undergoing testing for illness or disease, or blood donors giving blood for transfusions.

Phlebotomy technicians’ clinical duties revolve around taking blood from patients. The other tasks associated with drawing blood include:

  • Confirming patient identity
  • Helping patients relax
  • Preparing the area being injected
  • Labeling, securing, and storing the sample
  • Cleaning equipment, including tubes, vials, and needles
  • Sanitizing work stations
